Everyone loves an outdoor barbeque. Nothing beats the authentic flavor of foods grilled on a stainless steel charcoal grill. As foods brown on a grill, a wave of delicious aromas fills the air. While grilling is one of the ways to wake up your taste buds, it is important to do so safely. It is important to be mindful of how you use any cooking device, whether it be a stove, microwave, or grill.

Here’s how you can enjoy your grill safely, and handle rare situations should they come up:

Grill Flare-Up

What is a grill flare-up? Grill flare-ups are temporary surges of flame caused by fat drippings onto hot coals. Grill flare-ups are usually not a safety concern, but you might want to do something so as not to burn your meat.

Consider the following tips:

  1. Avoid piling the coals too high.
  2. Trim the fat from your meat to at least ¼ inch.
  3. Make sure the meat isn’t dripping when grilling it.
  4. Move the dripping meat to the cool part of the grill.
  5. Reduce the oil you brush on the meat.

If the flare-up has spread and is burning your food, then it can become a grease fire.

Grease Fire

While grill flare-ups are nothing to be concerned about, grease fires need to be extinguished immediately. You can do the following steps:

  1. Cover the grill and close all the air vents.
  2. Dump baking soda or salt on top of the grill.
  3. Put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Usually, the above methods should be able to handle a grease fire. If they do not work, it is time to call 911.

It is recommended to grill your meat outdoors or in open or well-ventilated areas. Stainless steel charcoal grills should not be used indoors, because they emit smoke during the grilling process. Simply step outside, fire up your grill, and breathe in some fresh air in the great outdoors as you do so.
